‘Float and set’ is a solid plastering term used when covering internal substrates. Floating a wall means using a backing plaster such as hardwall or bonding and other specialist plasters for grade listed buildings or those with damp.
The 'set' is the finishing of the backing plaster using plaster with high suction tolerance. A float and set should be applied within the same day for the best result.
Plaster skimming is the most common part of a plasterer’s job. Skimming normally entails applying two coats of finishing plaster over plasterboard or a re-skim that has been sealed or primed correctly, giving your internal walls a smooth and pristine finish, ready for painting and decorating.
Internal & External Rendering
This is where sand and cement is applied to brickwork or stone. Often to protect it from the elements and to modernise the look of a property or surrounding walls. A scratch coat goes on first, then a second coat which is buffed to a smooth finish. If a coloured render wasn’t used, these walls can then be painted with a colour of your choosing.
Plasterboards are most often used to build partition walls or ceilings. Once skimmed, it provides a smooth flat finish. The boards help those in charge of the construction of buildings meet regulations for fire protection, acoustic insulation and thermal efficiency. Plasterboards are also extremely useful for controlling condensation and minimising damage from high humidity.
The levelling of floor surfaces by flattening poured concrete into a smooth flat finish through the use of sand and cement screeds.
